Coffe stain removal – how to get coffee stains out of your carpet.
As a professional carpet cleaner one of the most common type of stains we see on a daily basis is coffee stains. Some of these can be very difficult to get out, while others are quite easy. It just depends on the type of fiber the coffee is spilled on.
If the coffee is spilled on a synthetic carpet then the chances of this stain coming out are pretty good. If the coffee is spilled on a wool carpet that makes the stain much more difficult to get out because wool absorbs water based stains really easy and is very easy to dye as wool accepts other dyes rather easily.
If you happen to have a coffee stain on your carpet, and your carpet is nylon, polypropolene, or polysester then the stain has a good chance of coming out if you follow the following procedure. You take a responsiblility for any damage that could occur if you follow this procedure.
The first thing you want to make sure of is that the carpet is synthetic. The easiest way to do this is to do a burn test. Just take a small piece of fiber from inside a closer or hidden area and safely burn it. If the fibers melts it is synthetic. If the fibers burns and smells like burning hair it is wool and you should NOT use the following procedure. How to get out coffee stains.
1. Absorb as much of the coffee as you can with a white terry cloth towel. Be really diligent in doing this. When you think you have absorbed as much as you can, then keep on using the towel.
2. Take 40 volume hydrogen peroxide (can be bought at Sally’s Beauty Supply) and spray the hydrogen peroxide directly on the stain. Do not soak the fibers, but get them wet.
You should be careful with the hydrogen peroxide. It can burn your skin, so use gloves. 40 volume hydrogen peroxide is commonly used to bleach hair in hair salons. What makes this work so well is that most of the coffee stain is organic. Organic stains respond very well to oxidizing agents and that is exactly what hydrogen peroxide is.
If you find that the stain still remains after the carpet is completely dry then just apply the hydrogen peroxide one more time, maybe twice. Each time let the carpet completely dry before you add more hydrogen peroxide. If this does not get the stain out then you should call a professional carpet cleaning compnay.
