Have We Been Buried Under a Mountain of Words?
It was recently estimated by experts that a mid-level manager in an average company now reads more than six times as much material at work today than they would have in 1950. That’s a huge increase in words, and while our education level has gone up, a simple reading test proves that our reading skills have not improved significantly since that time, meaning that today’s worker need to put in longer hours, bring work home, and might even solve this problem by simply not reading the important paperwork that they should be reading.
This mountain of words usually doesn’t stop once you’re at home either. From emails to newspapers, and even the amount of reading we do with social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook has increased.
There are a number of things which can make your life a lot easier, however. The first thing is to always stay organized. Take notes, which drastically reduces the amount of re-reading that you’ll need to do. In addition, you should learn to pre-read, or analyze what information you actually do need to read, and which you can get away without reading.
